Historic Village at the Meeting of the Rivers
Discover Hinton, a picturesque heritage village in the Port Stephens hinterland, set where the Hunter and Paterson Rivers meet. Wander past historic buildings and country homes, enjoy the peaceful riverside setting or stop for a meal at the historic Victoria Hotel. Surrounded by farmland and scenic country roads, Hinton is an easy detour from Raymond Terrace and a charming stop on a Hunter Valley or Port Stephens road trip, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich rural and river history.
Hinton is a small riverside village in the western hinterland of Port Stephens, where the Paterson and Hunter River country meets the neighboring heritage town of Morpeth. Surrounded by farmland and wide river flats, Hinton is a quiet place with a strong connection to the waterways, early transport routes and rural history of the Hunter.
One of the village’s most recognisable landmarks is the historic Hinton Bridge over the Paterson River. Opened in 1901, the timber truss bridge includes a lift span – a reminder of the days when river steamers travelled the Hunter River system. Hinton Bridge is also included on Maitland’s Historic Bridge Drive, linking it with other significant heritage bridges across the district.
At the heart of town is Stuart Park, a community sports ground with a heritage-listed grandstand, large Moreton Bay figs and upgraded visitor facilities. Look out for the striking Royal Spoonbill mural painted by Australian artist Jenny McCracken on the water tank. The artwork celebrates the birdlife and natural environment of the Hinton area and is designed with a three-dimensional effect.
For a taste of local history, stop by the Victoria Hotel on Paterson Road. Built in 1840, it is one of Australia’s oldest continually licensed hotels. Nearby Old Punt Road recalls the former punt that connected Hinton with Morpeth near the junction of the Paterson and Hunter Rivers.
Hinton makes an easy addition to a hinterland drive from Raymond Terrace and is only a short drive from Morpeth. Combine the village with Woodville, Phoenix Park and Morpeth for a relaxed day of heritage, country scenery, local food and riverside landscapes.
